A Thermal Mass Flow Meter is an instrument that measures the gas mass flow meter based on the principle of conductive and convective heat transfer. All flow meters have either insertion probes or in-line flow bodies which contain a pair of sensors which are in contact with the gas.


Thermal mass flow meters provide accurate, reliable flow measurement of natural gas flow meter, compressed air and other industrial gases. Insertion and inline mass flow meters have no moving parts and measure the mass of the fluid directly.

There are two types of thermal flow meters: rate of heat loss flowmeters and temperature rise flowmeters.


Coriolis Mass Flow Meter vs Thermal Mass Flow Meter

The quantity of fluid flowing past the fixed point in a given amount of time is the mass flow rate of the fluid. Thermal flow meters derive the mass flow rate of the fluid by calculating the cooling effect produced by the fluid in the temperature sensors.Coriolis flow meters allow the direct measurement of mass flows. Direct mass flow measurement eliminates inaccuracies caused by the physical properties of fluids. Thermal flow meters, on the other hand, allow indirect measurement of mass flows.

The meters directly measure gas mass flow and are frequently used in energy management systems, industrial process control, environmental applications, and building management systems. There is a suitable thermal mass flow meter for almost every low-flow gas application. Other low-flow gas application measurement technologies include Coriolis flow and differential pressure measurements.


Are thermal flow meters for gas or liquid applications?

Thermal mass flow meters are used almost entirely for gas flow applications. As the name implies, the meters use heat to measure flow, and they introduce heat into a flowing stream and measure how much heat dissipates using one or more temperature sensors.


This method works best with measuring gas mass flow. Due to heat absorption considerations, getting a solid signal using thermal mass flow meters in liquids is challenging.
