What is a thermal mass flow meter?

Working Principle of Thermal Mass Flow Meter 

Thermal mass flow sensors use the thermal dispersion principle which allows for the rate of heat absorbed by a gas to be directly proportional to its mass flow. In a typical thermal flow meter, flowing gas absorbs heat and cools the source. As flow increases, more heat is transferred to the gas, leading to an amount of heat dissipated from the source that is proportional to both the gas's mass flow and its thermal properties. Through measuring this heat transfer, it is possible to work out a mass flow rate. These meters are designed to accurately measure mass flow rather than volumetric flow, in clean gases that are not affected by temperature changes, pressure levels, viscosity or density. Therefore, corrections do not need to be made for these conditions.
