For applications with high duty cycle operation, using a low IqDCDC regulator in power save mode (for light loads) provides higher efficiency at a modest cost increase. For applications using batteries with a linear discharge curve such as multi-cell alkaline or NiXX, using a low Iq buck/boost converter will maximize power supply life by providing a regulated discharge voltage as low as 1.8V. For use with a single cell or small coin cell (in which case the battery voltage can be lower than the regulated voltage), using a low lq boost converter can provide an input voltage as low as 0.7V for the regulated voltage. While fully operational MCUs and peripheral communication ICs can be optimized for a certain voltage, these devices can still operate at a much lower voltage in standby mode (keeping only the RTC and memory). Battery life can be further extended by using DCDC converters and LDOs with dynamic voltage scaling (usually implemented through the V-Select logic pin). The mechanical force of an analog sensing gas meter is measured/detected by inductive sensors (flow), pressure sensors and RTD or silicon temperature sensors (temperature). Due to the very low voltages, precise low noise amplifiers (for flow and temperature) and instrumentation amplifiers such as the OPA2209 and INA10x (for pressure) are required on the front end, respectively. Typically, the voltage is digitized with a precision ADC integrated in the MSP430.
