Installation Instructions for Mass Flow Meters

1. The selection of the installation location of the mass flowmeter sensor a. The installation location should be far away from interference sources that can cause mechanical vibration of the pipeline, such as pumps on the process pipeline. If the sensors are used in series on the same pipeline, the mutual influence due to resonance should be especially prevented, and the distance between the sensors should be at least three times greater than the width of the external dimensions of the sensors. b. The installation position of the sensor should pay attention to the expansion and deformation of the process pipeline due to temperature changes, especially it should not be installed near the expansion joint of the process pipeline. If it is installed near the expansion joint, the zero point of the sensor will change due to the lateral stress caused by the expansion and contraction of the pipe, which will affect the measurement accuracy. c. The installation position of the sensor should be far away from industrial electromagnetic interference sources, such as high-power motors, transformers, etc., otherwise the self-resonant vibration of the measuring tube in the sensor will be disturbed, and the weak signal detected by the speed sensor may be submerged in the noise of electromagnetic interference middle. The sensor should be at least 5 meters away from the transformer and motor. d. The installation position of the sensor should ensure that the fluid in the pipeline is always filled with the sensor measuring tube and has a certain pressure, which requires that the installation position should be at the low end of the pipeline. 2. Selection of mass flowmeter sensor installation method The installation method of the sensor is mainly determined according to the fluid phase and its process conditions. There are three installation methods. a. If the measured fluid is a liquid, the sensor is generally installed with the shell facing down to avoid air accumulation in the sensor vibration tube, so as to achieve the purpose of accurately measuring the mass flow b. If the measured fluid is gas, the sensor is generally installed with the shell facing upwards. Avoid condensation collecting in the sensor vibrating tube. c. If the measured fluid is a mixed slurry of liquid and solid, install the sensor on a vertical pipeline, which can prevent particles from accumulating in the sensor's Coriolis force measuring tube. In addition, if the process pipeline needs to be cleaned with gas and steam, this installation method can also facilitate cleaning, but this installation method is more difficult to fix than the previous two, and the pressure loss is larger. 3. Other precautions during installation a. Before the sensor is installed on the process pipeline, it should be confirmed whether the speed sensor coil of the sensor, the DC resistance of the drive coil and the resistance value of the platinum resistance thermometer are normal. b. The sensor installation flange must be connected coaxially with the pipe flange, so as to reduce the installation stress and ensure the measurement accuracy. During installation, ensure that the pipe support only supports the process pipe, and it is forbidden to use the sensor to support the process pipe. It should be ensured that the sensor housing is suspended and not in contact with any objects. c. When the sensor is installed on the process pipeline, it should be ensured that the pipeline system is firmly connected with two stable supports on the upstream and downstream sides of the sensor. All threaded connections must be tightened. Clamping the process pipeline helps to reduce potential vibration interference . d. During the installation process, avoid moving the sensor by the sensor shell. e. The valves or pumps on the process pipeline near the sensor installation location need to have their own supports, and the supports that support the sensors cannot be used to support the valves and pumps. f. A shut-off valve should be installed upstream and downstream of the sensor. g. Eliminate installation stress: When installing the sensor, in order to eliminate the installation stress, the most effective method is to install the pipe first, pre-install the process pipeline, valve and sensor as a whole, then hoist it, and then weld it to the process main line. In order to achieve the best effect of stress relief, the sensor, shut-off valve and process main line should be in the same vertical plane. 4. Vibration reduction a. When installing the sensor, choose a suitable installation location. In addition to keeping away from the vibration source, in order to eliminate the impact of vibration on the measurement, the support rod should be used to firmly support the pipe and valve during installation. The lower end of the support rod must be fixed on a solid foundation, and the upper end cooperates with the pipe clamp to support the process pipeline. Do not use the sensor housing to support the sensor, pipelines, valves, pumps, etc.

Wow, this sounds like a bit of a cruel question, but it is a vitally important question to ask yourself if you are struggling with your insertion ultrasonic flow meter and you would like to stop the mass flow meter problem.
